Course Material Information

The Ashland University Bookstores offer hard-copy textbooks as the traditional form of course materials. We sell new copies of books as well as used and a few titles are offered as rentals. In addition to textbooks, there are study guides, lab books, custom course packets, customized bundles, and eBooks.

New textbooks are priced with a set mark up to cover shipping and handling costs and other operating expenses including student employee wages. Used books are priced at 75% of the new book price. We recommend buying used books whenever possible. Our goal is to have the most used books available for sale to save our students money. We will purchase new copies only when used books are not available.

When eBooks are available, we offer then on the shelves and on-line. Pricing typically is 50% of the new book pricing. Rental books are offered for only a few classes at 40% of the new book price and must be rented in the main store. Rentals and eBooks have no buyback value like new and used textbooks do, but the "out of pocket" expense is much lower.  

The AU Bookstore and the Columbus Center Bookstore are always in the market to purchase textbooks back from students.  At the end of each major semester, the Bookstore conducts a major buy and offers 50% of the new book price for those titles we know we will need in the upcoming term.  During a major buy, what we purchase and the price we offer is directly impacted by what is ordered for the upcoming term.  Without the necessary adoption information, the best we can do is offer students a price that is set by a used book distributor based on supply and demand on other campuses (nationwide). All proceeds of the Ashland University Bookstores are returned to the university and its students to support many campus programs and activities.
